If a move is on your mind, turn a weekend drive into a chance to get acquainted with a community. Take the road through downtown. Stop for lunch. Notice how far you are from groceries, work, and the places you’d visit regularly. A town that looks promising on a map can feel very different once you spend an afternoon there.
When you tour a home, picture an ordinary fall day. Where would the muddy boots land? Is there room for everyone around the table? Would you actually use that big yard, or would a smaller space leave you more time for the things you enjoy? Those everyday details deserve a place on your wish list.

Bring a little fall home with maple apple crisp
After a day outdoors, a warm apple crisp feels like a very good reason to turn on the oven. This version pairs apples and cinnamon with maple syrup and a buttery oat topping. It’s simple enough for a quiet Sunday and just as welcome at a table full of friends.

Bake time: 40–45 minutes
Rest time: 10 minutes
Total time: 70–75 minutes

Baking dish: 8-inch square baking dish
Oven temperature: 350°F
For the apple filling
- 6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples, about 6 medium apples
- ¼ cup pure maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
For the topping
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup packed light brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
How to make it
- Get ready. Heat the oven to 350°F and lightly butter an 8-inch square baking dish.
- Mix the filling. Slice the apples about ¼ inch thick. In a large bowl, toss them with the maple syrup, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pinch of salt. Spread evenly in the prepared dish.
- Make the topping. In a separate bowl, stir together the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the melted butter and mix until you have a crumbly mixture with some small clumps.
- Assemble and bake. Scatter the topping evenly over the apples. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the topping is golden, the filling bubbles around the edges, and the apples are tender when pierced with a knife. If the topping browns before the apples soften, loosely cover with foil and continue baking.
- Let it settle. Rest for 10 minutes before serving. Spoon into bowls and add vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or an extra drizzle of maple syrup.
A mix of sweet and tart apples gives the filling a nice balance. And if everyone gathers in the kitchen while it bakes, we can hardly blame them.
