Spring Real Estate, Tick Safety, Recipes & Fresh Air!

Spring in Maine always feels like a big exhale — especially after a stretch of those warm, sunny days that remind us winter really is behind us.

The windows are open, yards are waking up, and everyone seems ready to get outside again. Around here, that means spring cleanups, muddy boots, trail walks, and maybe even starting to think seriously about a new home.

At Rizzo Mattson, Realtors®, we love this time of year. It’s busy, a little muddy, full of possibility, and very Maine. So we put together a quick spring roundup with a little bit of everything: real estate insight, tick safety reminders, a simple seasonal recipe, and a few ways to enjoy the area we’re lucky to call home.

The Central Maine Market Is Waking Up

Spring is always an active season in real estate, and we’re already seeing more people getting serious about their next move.

Buyers are watching for new listings. Sellers are starting to freshen up their homes. And well-priced properties in Central Maine are still catching attention quickly.

For buyers, this is a great time to get prepared. Talk with a lender, know your budget, and be ready when the right home hits the market.

For sellers, spring can be a great window to list. Better weather, greener yards, longer daylight, and motivated buyers can all work in your favor.

The biggest takeaway? Whether you’re buying or selling, having a plan makes the process feel a whole lot less overwhelming.

Tick Season Is Back… Because Maine Likes to Keep Us Humble

We love Maine’s fresh air, woods, water, and wide-open spaces. Unfortunately, ticks love them too.

As you head outside this spring, here are a few helpful reminders:

  • Wear light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to spot.
  • Check yourself, your kids, and your pets after being outside.
  • Use tick repellent when walking through woods, brush, or tall grass.
  • Toss clothes in the dryer on high heat after outdoor adventures.
  • Keep grass trimmed and clear leaves/brush around your yard.

It only takes a few extra minutes, and it can make a big difference. Maine is worth enjoying—just check for tiny hitchhikers afterward.

🍓 A Simple Spring Favorite: Strawberry Shortcake

There’s something about strawberry shortcake that feels like warmer days are officially here—simple, fresh, and just right after a day outside.

Ingredients (Serves 4–6):

  • 1 lb fresh strawberries (about 3–4 cups, sliced)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 4–6 shortcake biscuits (or ~1 lb pound cake, sliced)
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Prep the strawberries
Slice strawberries and toss with 1/4 cup sugar. Let sit for 15–20 minutes until they release their juices.
  2. Make the whipped cream
In a bowl, beat 1 cup heavy cream with 2 tbsp powdered sugar and 1/2 tsp vanilla until soft peaks form.
  3. Assemble
Split biscuits or slice cake, spoon strawberries over the base, add whipped cream, then top with the other half. Add extra cream if you want.

Optional Add-Ons:

  • A squeeze of fresh lemon juice (1 tsp) with the strawberries
  • Swap in maple sugar for a Maine twist
  • Add blueberries for a red, white & blue version

Get Out and Enjoy Central Maine

One of the best parts of living here is that you don’t have to go far to find something beautiful.

Take a walk along the Kennebec River Rail Trail. Grab breakfast at a local diner. Drive through Belgrade, Winthrop, Hallowell, Gardiner, or one of our many small towns and enjoy watching everything come back to life.

Spring in Central Maine is muddy boots, open windows, fresh coffee, lake days getting closer, and everyone slowly remembering how much they missed being outside.
