Checklist for Spring Yard Clean-Up Success

It’s an important point for every homeowner to remember: When it comes to yard clean-up each spring, the clean-up isn’t “just” about the beauty and aesthetics of your yard. It’s also about the practical, life-enhancing preparation of your home’s outdoor space for fun and enjoyment throughout the warmer months ahead.

So what’s the best way to tackle your yard clean-up this spring? Use this clear, step-by-step checklist to do just that!

Assess Your Yard

First, take a closer look at your entire yard and outdoor space. Walk slowly around your yard, noting in writing any areas that may need special care. Identify any specific problem areas, such as patches of dead grass or overgrown shrubs that will require pruning.

Declutter, Then Remove Debris

Next, it’s time to tackle any clutter that has accumulated over the winter. Start by clearing away dead leaves and branches cluttering your yard. Also, pay special attention to flower beds, gently cleaning out debris to make way for new growth.

Trim & Prune

Spring is your ideal time for giving trees and shrubs some love. Grab your trusty pruning shears, and trim back any overgrown branches that may be blocking sunlight or crowding out other plants. Also—importantly—look for any dead or damaged branches that should be removed to promote healthy growth.

Lawn Care

Every homeowner wants a gorgeous, lush, green lawn, so next turn your attention to that. Awaken your lawn mower from its winter hibernation, and mow and edge your yard’s grass to make it neat and trim. As you do this, take note of any bare patches that may need seeding or sodding to encourage new growth.

Garden Beds & Plant Care

Your garden beds can be the “magic touch” that really makes your lawn “spring to life” in spring, so give them that extra love they deserve. Take a moment to inspect your plants for any signs of disease or damage, and remove unhealthy specimens to prevent any spread. Finally, refresh the soil in your garden beds and replenish mulch to provide essential nutrients and moisture to your plants.

Hardscape Maintenance

Although your yard, flowers, and shrubs may command and deserve much of your attention, don’t forget the “hardscape elements” (walkways, patios, etc.) that also contribute importantly to your outdoor space. Take a walk along your walkways and patios, checking for any damage or debris that need attention. Then clean and repair these surfaces to create a safe, inviting environment for outdoor gatherings and relaxation all spring and summer long.
