The Heart & History of Rizzo Mattson: 4 Agents, Over 125 Years of Experience
When you boil it down, the history of a company is the history of its people. Their passion. Their wisdom. Their love of community. Their HEART and devotion to their clients.
Rizzo Mattson—now known as Coldwell Banker Rizzo Mattson Realtors®—has that history. It is a “people’s history”. To show you that distinctive history more personally, here are parts of it as seen through the eyes of some of our longest-serving, most highly experienced agents—each one of whom has been with us for more than 20 years. Altogether, these professionals and their colleagues offer more than 350+ years of experience helping folks like you buy and sell homes in central Maine.
Merrie’s role in the history of Rizzo Mattson started long before Rizzo Mattson! In November 1989, she joined a company then known as Ross Rizzo & Hanna shortly after the company opened its Manchester branch. Merrie landed her position at the company in a most unusual way.
“I walked in to congratulate the sales manager, and walked out having agreed to join their team!” she laughed.
Why was Merrie drawn to real estate as an occupation? “It’s a way to make a difference in a person’s life,” she said. “I always thought it was important to own your own home. Here at Coldwell Banker Rizzo Mattson Realtors®, we’ve been ahead of the curve in offering buyers and sellers opportunities, even in the most challenging of markets.”
After all this time, how does Merrie feel about Coldwell Banker Rizzo Mattson Realtors®? “It’s a great place to work,” she said. “It offers me opportunities and supports me in being a successful, professional Realtor.”
Geri had been co-owner of the Mark Stimson Real Estate Network office in Gardner before she joined Rizzo Mattson Realtors in 1996. John Rizzo—founder of the agency and father of current Designated Broker/Owner Brian Rizzo—was interested in buying into the Mark Stimson franchise at the time, and the two companies subsequently merged.
When asked what attracted her to real estate, Geri responded, “I wanted a career where I could make a difference. I wanted to be a problem solver, a coach, a cheerleader, and a counselor. Over the years, the market has had its ups and downs, but guiding folks and helping them meet their needs with a favorable outcome is the greatest benefit Coldwell Banker Rizzo Mattson Realtors® and I can offer.”
So why has she stood by Coldwell Banker Rizzo Mattson Realtors® for more than 26 years? “Because Brian Rizzo has stood by me,” Geri said. “Brian is a sincere and kind man. He respects me. He gives sound advice and encouragement. At Coldwell Banker Rizzo Mattson Realtors®, I’m not just a number.”
Shortly after Geri Doyle entered the agency, she was joined by Jennifer “Jenn” Day.
“When I joined in 1996,” Jenn said, “the agency was operating as Rizzo Mattson Realtors and about to be affiliated with the Mark Stimson Real Estate Network.”
Like Merrie Hanson, her initial entrée to being a real estate broker was a happy twist of fate. “I was in the process of purchasing my first home,” she said, “and my broker suggested I would be a great fit in the real estate industry. As someone who thrives on relationships and who values community and being of service to others, I am so incredibly thankful life pulled me in this direction.”
Jenn sees that direction as both serendipitous and a great responsibility. “To be a trusted real estate agent, it's incredibly important to listen objectively, put in the time to do the research, and take a critical look at the bigger picture. A home often represents a person’s largest investment and what will be the greatest part of their assets. Representing that interest comes with a big responsibility.”
Like Merrie and Geri, Jenn credits a big part of her success to the blessings of working for Coldwell Banker Rizzo Mattson Realtors®. “All of us here have the good fortune of working with a group of professionals who encourage one another to maintain a high standard of practice. It’s the career trifecta: a career built on integrity, licensed with a reliable agency, which is affiliated with a trusted national brand like Coldwell Banker. Definitely a win-win-win!”
Of all the long-time agents highlighted here, Jean is the spring chicken. She’s “only” been at Coldwell Banker Rizzo Mattson Realtors® for 24 years!
“I joined the agency in the fall of 1997,” she said. “My previous career was as a project manager with Digital Corporation. I loved the fast pace! After Digital was bought out, I continued to seek a similar pace coupled with work that is personally satisfying.” She thanks a career coach in Portland for helping her see that real estate was the perfect fit. “After she assessed my skills, work ethic, and passions,” Jean shared, “all signs pointed to real estate.”
And why is Jean, in turn, a good fit for her clients? “I like to think that people like my candor, direct approach, and ongoing communication. People appreciate the truth and know they benefit from being part of a transparent process. They also benefit from what our office offers—a consistent, trusted name in the central Maine real estate market.”
So does staying at Coldwell Banker Rizzo Mattson Realtors® for 24 years mean she kind of likes the place?
“Absolutely,” Jean laughed “For me, this office is all about the people I work alongside —from the top down. I get to be affiliated with colleagues who offer a wealth of experience. There is a sense of comradery and encouragement among all the agents, and I value these relationships both in and out of the office.”
The agency, now known as Coldwell Banker Rizzo Mattson Realtors®, began with John Rizzo’s dream of launching a different type of realty company—one that would be a benefit to clients and employees alike. If you ask Merrie, Geri, Jenn, and Jean, they’ll tell you John most definitely succeeded and his son Brian ably continues the legacy.
