5 Wintertime Family-Friendly Activities in Maine

Now that the Holiday and New Year’s celebrations are over, where can you continue to find memory-making, family-friendly activities this winter? Well, if you’re in Central Maine, you need not look too far! Here are 5 family-friendly activities your whole family can get into, as you create some joyous new memories throughout winter 2020.

Ice Skating

Grab your ice skates, go to a safe frozen pond or nearby ice rink—and start having too much family fun! Central Maine boasts more than 100 lakes and ponds to access and indoor ice rinks in Hallowell and Waterville. Ice skating is great exercise for your whole family. You’ll burn 450 to 650 calories per hour, increase your athleticism and balance, and sharpen your mind’s ability to focus and concentrate. Not bad!

Snow Shoeing

This is easily one of the most fun, most memorable ways to enjoy a great time outdoors in Maine during the winter...and as a bonus you’ll burn 600 to 1,000 calories per hour!  If you snowshoe on one of the great wooded trails in Central Maine, you stand an excellent chance of seeing wildlife “up close and personal.” Your whole family will delight in catching a glimpse of a deer, rabbits, winter birds, or maybe a moose as you bask in the crisp, clean outdoor air.

Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding

Ski Maine lists 16 downhill ski areas in Maine, and most of them are either within—or within easy driving distance of—the Augusta/Central Maine area. At areas such as Sunday River, Camden Snow Bowl, or Lost Valley, you’ll find the very best Maine has to offer in terms of joy-filled, family-friendly skiing and snowboarding opportunities.

Movie Marathon

So what if there’s a snowstorm outside and your family is stuck indoors? No problem! It’s time for a nostalgic Movie Marathon! Get some of your all-time favorite G or PG rated movies, fire up the DVD, Blu-ray, or streaming service, and sit back and enjoy. Don’t forget to pass the popcorn!

Family History Get-Together

What can Grandpa, Nana, you, or your children’s aunts and uncles share about your family history? What hilarious or amazing or shocking things have happened to various family members? Sharing these things will deepen everyone’s appreciation of both family history and pay to homage old-fashioned storytelling!

We hope these 5 family-friendly wintertime activity ideas - and a few others we shared a while back - will help your family have a wonderful, enriching time in Central Maine this winter.
