Home Maintenance: Winter Checklist

Checklist for Winter Home Maintenance

Winter isn’t coming – it’s here! As the snow falls and the temperature drops, there are certain home maintenance items that you need to start keeping in mind for the upcoming season. Here are a few winter-specific tasks to help ensure you’re prepared.

Service your Snow Blower

It is very likely that you will get lots of use out of your snow blower this time of year. Because of this, it is best to have it serviced (or service it yourself!) before you discover that it is not working properly after your driveway is covered in snow and you need to get to work.

Buy Your Supplies in Advance

It is also a great idea for winter home maintenance to already have things like shovels, salt, and a roof rake ready. This way, you can always stay one step ahead of the weather and be ready for whatever winter has in store for you.

Check Your Roof and Gutters

Before the first big snow of the season, you should have a look at your roof and gutters to ensure that there is not any damage. The most common type of gutter damage is weak spots caused by age or rust. When coupled with the extra weight of ice and snow, these spots can be very dangerous.

Clean the Chimney

This home maintenance step is especially true if you still use wood in the chimney. A dirty or clogged chimney can pose significant danger to you and your family as it greatly increases the risk of a house fire.

Service your Heating System

You want to make sure that everything is in order for the long, cold months ahead! By ensuring that your heating system and associated parts are in tiptop shape, you can save yourself from frigid nights, frozen pipes and big disasters.
