7 Reasons why Augusta, Maine has the Best Neighborhoods

Augusta, Maine is one of the best places to raise a family, retire, and experience everything in between. Why? Because of our amazing neighborhoods. Our city is filled with vibrant communities that are sure to positively shape your life.

Here are just seven of the many reasons why Augusta has the best neighborhoods:

Education

Augusta is quite the scholarly town. Its award-winning public schools, excellent private offerings, and the nearby University of Maine ensure that your family will never want for amazing educational opportunities. One such example is the amazing Lithgow Library, a staple in Maine education since the nineteenth century.

Health

No matter which Augusta neighborhood you call home, you’re never far from a great hospital. Maine General Hospital is headquartered here, offering some of the best care in the state practically in your backyard.

Augusta is also home to the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care (or the HACCC for short). It is home to world-class cancer treatment and is a real pioneer on the way to a cure. We are lucky to have it in our area!

You can also find a list of other excellent practices in the area here.

History

Augusta became county seat for the newly created Kennebec County in 1799, before Maine even became a state in 1820. We’ve had plenty of time to settle in and create amazing pockets of community all over the city. Each neighborhood has its own unique backstory and secrets to discover. You can get a head start on these secrets by spending some time exploring at the Maine State Museum.

Outdoor Recreation

Augusta is perfectly located at the top of the Kennebec Rail Trail which connects Augusta to Hallowell and Gardiner to the south. We also have dozens of cross-county and cycling trails available, so there is a way to explore in every Maine season. If you prefer something less strenuous, you can also stop by the Augusta Arboretum for a relaxing afternoon of bird watching.

Service

Augusta has some of the best neighborhoods simply because of its neighbors. You’ll not find a more compassionate, friendly, hardworking bunch anywhere else in the state. You’ll soon see that Augustans enjoy serving all members of their community through organizations like United Way, the Augusta Food Bank, and local literacy volunteers.

Location

Halfway between Portland and Bangor, Augusta is perfectly located in Maine’s sweet spot. If you’d like to spend a weekend away in the woods, or down at the seaside, neither is more than a short drive away.
