5 Tips for Preparing your Patio for Winter

5 Tips For Preparing Your Patio Furniture For Winter - Grill in the SnowWinter is coming! And because of this, you need to begin preparing your patio for the season to ensure it’s in top condition for many years to come. So we’ve put together this quick list of tips to get you well on your way.

Bring the Cushions Inside

Patio furniture is typically sturdy enough to survive the worst of winter in Maine, but cushions and other cloth decorations are not. At the first sign of frost, you’ll want to bring them inside, clean them off, and store them in space bags or plastic bins until spring. Just be careful about keeping them in a clean, dry place, as you don’t want any hibernating creatures spending their winter nibbling on your cushions.

Scrub It Down

A good power washing or thorough scrubbing down is essential when preparing your patio for winter. You’ll want to remove any stains from the summer, like ground in dirt from your hiking boots, sauce from your family barbeque, or paint from when you redid the garage. The constant freezing and thawing of these substances can seriously damage your patio.

Check It Over

Once your patio is sparkling, you’ll want to ensure there is no outstanding damage.  Look over the entire space for any rotting wood, loose screws, or cracks in the concrete. If you discover any problems, you need to take care of them right away, as Maine’s low winter temperatures will only make them worse.

Seal It Up

The next step is to coat your patio with a water-repellent finish to make sure that Maine’s snow, ice, winter rain, and the like won’t be able to damage it. No one enjoys starting spring with warped wood or cracked concrete, so although it only needs to be done every three years or so, make sure not to skip this step when it’s time.

Enjoy It

Winters in Maine are long, but this doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy the use of your outdoor space during them. If you don’t have an outdoor fireplace, fire pits or space heaters are a cheap and easy way to warm up your patio for winter soirees.
